田舎の電車は人もまばらで、その車両にはわたしの他には若いお姉さんがひとりだけ乗っていた。お姉さんはなぜか水着姿だった。わたしとお姉さんの他には誰もいない車両のなかで、お姉さんの近くや、お姉さんが見える位置に座る勇気がわたしにはなく、遠く離れたところに座ってぼんやりと外を眺めていた。どうして、あのお姉さんは水着なのだろうかと考えていた。いくつかの駅を過ぎた気がしたけれど、やはり車両にはわたしとお姉さんしかいない。ふと気づくといつのまにかお姉さんはわたしの目の前に座っていた。わたしは驚き、水着の胸元にちらりと視線をやって、恥ずかしくなって目を逸らした。するとお姉さんはにっこりほほえんで「こういうのはどうですか」と言いながらバッグから桃を取り出して頭の上に掲げた。お姉さんの腋が見えた。わたしはついお姉さんの腋をじっとりと眺める。「桃食べませんか」お姉さんの言葉で我に返る。わたしは礼を述べ差し出された桃を食べていた。目的の駅にはまだつかない。この列車が目的の駅に着くのかわからなくなってきた。
